Patagonia Review: Jackets, Duffels and the Guarantee Behind Them
Patagonia isn't the cheapest name in outdoor gear. Nobody argues that. What it sells instead is a pitch about keeping things in use: a guarantee on what it makes, a repair program, a used-gear store. The company even calls Earth its only shareholder. Is the gear worth the money? Here's what we cover. A few popular pieces. The offers you can use in the US right now. How Patagonia stacks up against The North Face. And the rules you should read first. We haven't worn any of it ourselves. Everything here comes from Patagonia's own pages and published coverage.

Top Patagonia Products
Better Sweater® Fleece Jacket
The men's version lists at $169. It's a fleece with a knit look. Recycled polyester, all of it. Sewn in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory. Patagonia says the knit can pill, and gives care tips for it. Over 1,100 people reviewed it on the site. The average is 4.4 out of 5. Sizing opinions split a little, so read a few.
Nano Puff® Jacket
Light, packable, synthetic. The insulation is PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation Eco, which Patagonia says is made from postconsumer recycled polyester and stays warm when wet. The men's jacket lists at $239. Some last-season colors were marked down hard when we looked. Fit comments run tight in the chest.
Down Sweater™ Hoody
The women's one costs $345. It's filled with down rated 800 fill power, and the down is certified to the Responsible Down Standard. You carry about 12 ounces. People like how warm it is. They like how small it folds up. A few say the fit changed from one purchase to the next. Patagonia replies to those and offers exchanges.
Black Hole® Duffel 40L
It's a $165 travel bag. The body is recycled fabric. The straps come off, and you can wear it like a backpack. It fits as a carry-on. Owners say it lasts. They say it keeps water out too. One reviewer wanted a traditional strap.

Patagonia vs The North Face
The North Face is the name most shoppers weigh against Patagonia. Both back their gear. They just do it differently.
| Patagonia | The North Face | |
|---|---|---|
| Guarantee | Says it guarantees everything it makes | Limited Lifetime Warranty on most products, covering manufacturing defects over the product's expected lifespan |
| Who it covers | Check the Help Center for details | Original owner only, not transferable |
| Used gear | Trade-in credit and used listings through Worn Wear | Renewed line, with a one-year warranty |
| Repairs | DIY guides, or send it in | Online claim with photos, typically 2 to 3 weeks |
Patagonia's guarantee is written broadly. The North Face spells out its limits, including exclusions for normal wear, accidents and unauthorized sellers. The North Face's warranty page lays this out. Neither one covers every problem. Buy from the brand itself or a seller it approves.
Worn Wear, Trade-In and Repairs

Patagonia pushes repair before replacement. Its repair page points to do-it-yourself videos for zippers, buttons and insulation patches, plus a send-in option. Damage from wear and tear is repaired for a "reasonable charge," per the returns form, and garments sent in must be clean.
Trade-in works by mail or at Patagonia-owned stores. You answer a short quiz. You mail your gear. Then you get store credit. Spend it on Patagonia.com or in Patagonia's own stores. They need seven to ten business days once your box arrives. Shoes, T-shirts, baselayers and sleeping bags aren't accepted. Worn Wear is also being folded into Patagonia.com, so used listings may have moved by the time you read this.

Shipping and Returns
Orders ship in one to two business days and usually arrive in three to ten. Free shipping starts above $99. Credit card refunds are possible for purchases up to one year old, according to Patagonia's returns form, and you'll want a receipt. Without one, you get a gift card at the last sale price. The form also says to use a tracked, insured carrier. Patagonia's exchange process includes free shipping both ways. Read the current policy on its Help Center before a big order.

Why Consider Patagonia
Start with the help you get after you buy. You get a guarantee. You get repair guides. You get a trade-in. So when a zipper breaks, the jacket doesn't have to be thrown away. That helps if you buy fewer, better things. The materials are another point. Many of the pieces above use recycled fabrics, and the ones we checked were made in Fair Trade Certified™ factories.
It suits hikers, travelers and commuters who want gear for years, and anyone who'd rather fix than toss. It suits gift buyers too, thanks to the exchange process. It fits less well if the lowest sticker price matters most. Patagonia rarely discounts across the board.
Patagonia Pros and Cons
| Type | Point | What It Means For You |

| Pro | Recycled materials | Core pieces use recycled fabrics. |
| Pro | Free exchanges | Fit mistakes don't cost shipping. |
| Con | Higher prices | The Down Sweater™ Hoody lists at $345. |
| Con | No public promo codes | Savings come from markdowns, not coupons. |
| Con | Mixed fit comments | Several reviewers mention tight chests or changed sizing. |
Final Verdict
Patagonia makes sense for people who buy gear to keep it. If you hike or travel a lot, this is for you. Same if you don't mind paying more at the start. Repairs and trade-in help too. Want to spend less to begin? Try the Better Sweater® or the Black Hole® Duffel.
Look elsewhere if you want deep, frequent discounts or the cheapest jacket on the rack. The North Face might suit you better. So might other brands.
